The next few weeks were hectic beyond all reason. Not that I let it deter me from spending time with Brandon. No matter how tight the window, or how much I paid for it later, it was worth it. And as an added bonus, I had expanded my skill set. I’d become a master at splitting my attention between my Mac and the sidewalk beyond the studio window. That’s no easy feat, especially for someone like me who tends to become absorbed in work. It didn’t hurt that I had an uncanny ability to spot Brandon in a crowd.

I exploited my new superpowers at every opportunity. Sometimes that meant darting out of the studio to join Brandon on a walk with one of his four-legged charges. Or maybe it meant sitting on the bench across the street in the cool October morning to share coffee and muffins. My personal favorite is how often I’d find myself pinned against the side of my building while he kissed me stupid. Good times. And I needed more of them. Stat.

Regardless of how many hours I worked, my to-do list just grew. And grew. I had to face reality: I needed to hire help. But who? Who could I trust?

Clique was my aunt’s legacy. Her work, her heart, and all I had left of the woman who taught me everything. Olivia spent years building a loyal client base for Clique. Parents raved far and wide over her stunning portraits, while their little darlings told hushed tales of magical afternoons. Word of mouth alone accounted for the bulk of her business. But once she’d been featured in a parenting magazine and recognized for her work with special-needs children, her bookings exploded. We could hardly keep up with demand. When she became ill, everything changed. There’d been no choice. Priorities shifted.

I cherished the time I had with her, and for trusting me with everything she held dear.

I kept Clique busy by continuing the type of work my aunt had been well-known for, while putting my own spin on things and expanding the offerings to include graphic design. My backlog was relatively manageable, except for the times when I overextended myself. Or when an innocuous gig at Pumped, the local gym, for website redesign photos turned into an impromptu fitness shoot that went viral.

I’d been wrapping things up when I caught sight of Grant doing warm-ups and stretches. The local pseudo-celebrity wasted no time capitalizing on the opportunity that stood drooling at his feet. With hardly more than a few leading comments and a little Tom Sawyer charm, he “allowed” me to snap a few shots while I practically tripped over myself in gratitude. What can I say? The dude was fine, the light was perfect, and I loved the way his muscles rippled and bunched.

Once I shook off the sweaty-hot-dude spell, I sat down to tinker with the images. The results were heavily stylized and sexy as fuck. I e-mailed him two hi-def watermarked images.

He posted them to his social media and website.
